It is not hunger, or not only

A cat that wakes you at five is usually not starving. It is awake, bored, and has learned that a paw on your face produces a person. The food is the reward that happened to follow. That is why feeding earlier rarely fixes it: the cat simply moves the alarm.

What owners on OnlyMeows found

  • Ignoring it consistently for a few weeks worked for the most people, but only when everyone in the house held the line. One person giving in resets the clock.
  • Closing the bedroom door was the fastest fix and the loudest one: many cats scratch the door for the first nights, then stop.
  • An automatic feeder set for an hour before the usual wake-up moved the cat's attention from the bed to the kitchen. It does not work for cats who want company rather than food.
  • A play session before bed shortened the mornings for kittens and young cats more than any gadget.

Nothing worked until we changed our own schedule. We stopped reacting, and after ten days she stopped asking.

What did not help

Shouting, spraying water and pushing the cat off the bed all count as attention. Every owner who tried them reported the same thing: the cat came back, sometimes louder.

When to see a vet

A senior cat that starts yowling at night out of nowhere, or a cat that seems disoriented rather than playful, is a vet visit, not a training problem. Overactive thyroid and high blood pressure both show up as night noise in older cats.
